instrument cluster rebuild

Post by jared »

1968 ford f100 ranger

my gas gauge, blinkers & horn are all not working.
they all went out at different times so not exactly sure the cause.

had a guy look at it that recommended rebuilding the instrument cluster.
anybody know if it's worth having that done?
or if that'd be the fix for those 3 things?

if so, what would be an average price to rebuild it?

thanks!

Gonna have 3 separate issues here for sure, and I'd find another mechanic to start with, (as it's evident he doesn't know the bump Ford instrument cluster to start with.
I'll start with the gas gauge and let some other guys chime in here too.
Here's the "gas gauge tech" to start. Do you have a voltage meter to test with, (and don't be afraid of learning how to use one as you're gonna need to know that for many other things on the truck). Most of us here are willing to teach how to use a meter guys, reach out to us!

hey basketcase0302,

thanks for the reply & sorry for the crazy delayed reply on my end!

took it to another place to have it looked at...
ended up, the needle for the gas gauge was just dragging on the plate, so pulled it off a bit & is working great now!
horn is all working again.
blinkers started working, but now out again, so maybe a loose wire. gonna check that out again to find the issue.

thanks again!

Jared,

When you say the blinkers are not working,.... are you just referring to the blinker lights on the instrument cluster?

Are the blinker lights front and rear working?

If the lights on the cluster and the lights on the truck are not working it could be the blinker switch in the steering column.

hey lee,

the blinkers (front/rear) & the lights in the cluster were neither one working.

i did see the fuse was blown again, i had replaced it recently.
so must be a short somewhere.
i replaced the fuse & they are working now. gonna see if it blows again & go from there.

thanks lee!
