68 CS Project: update 4/16/09
Hey Guys,
Hopefully this will work...
I went back and copied all the progess reports with photos to make a single thread out of them...
KaptnKA S
Getting Started
Project Update... 11-2
After waiting for over a year, I am finally getting started on the '68 CS.
I've been workin' on the Bump trailer and Olde Skool to keep me from goin' nuts while waiting to get this project started.
My buddy Kyle and I were supposed to start on this last winter, but he had a 3 foot diameter fir tree fall on his house...
he was finally able to move back in a couple of months ago.
The storm did around $130,000.00 dollars damage to his nearly brand new two story home.
I was only able to get over there one evening this week after work.
I'm really hoping to have the engine out and on the stand Saturday.
Here's the pics I got so far.. I'll take more as the project unfolds...
Shoulda got the hood painted before the rain set in
Got the hood off
Engine compartment 1
Engine compartment 2
Nasty wires & rust
Rad out fan off… lots of rust.
KaptnKA S
Project update.... 11-3
Spent most of the day over at my buddies workin' on the CS...
We made incredible progress...
Got the engine out and on the ground...
Z bar... check out where the PO hooked the spring from the clutch arm (brake line)
hooking up the hoist
out it comes
engine out
Can anyone tell if the tranny is an NP435 or is it a T-18?
The one I have to replace it with is definately a 435...
if this one is a T-18 will the shifter from a it work on a 435???
holy floor
removing header flanges
I'm really tired and sore from crawlin' all up under it, but it feels really good to finally get to this point.
(click on the pic to see it full size)
KaptnKA S
Project update... 11-21
Spent the day tearing down the CS...
Got the steering column pullled so I can rebuild it with the
pwr steering shaft and paint before reinstalling.
Pulled the grille, bumper, and lower valence.
Only the two main rad support bolts left to remove support...
Pulling column
Column out
Rusted clip
Radiator support rust
Radiator support rust
(click on pic to enlarge)
The bad rust is only about the size of 1/4 of a dollar bill (or smaller)
I am debating about just cleaning the existing support up instead of replacing it... this is sorta what I have in mind.
1) Cut out the active rust to clean metal...
2) Use Eastwood rust encapsulator to kill the rest of the rust
3) Patch with sheet metal and fiberglass enpregnated resin
4) Paint
The floor pans also have a couple of small areas that could be patched the same way.
Anyone got any ideas or feed back ?
Thanks again,
KaptnKA S

Thats good progress Looks good, i have some of the eastwood stuff but haven't been able to use it yet, looks good on there.
That trans looks like an np435 but a little hard to tell from that angle, if you really want to know it will be stamped on the top cover, and the 435 has an aluminum top cover. That stripper looks like it is good stuff. You making me look bad keep up the good work

Kapn,
Looking good man!
What brand is that stripper?
Looks like some good stuff, (I'm thinking of all the time I could have saved in the past)!

It's called Clean Strip.

re: 68 CS Project
Today I made some progress, but not as much as I planned...
I wasn't able to brake the pitman arm nut lose to swap them so I ran the PS box down to the machine shop they busted it lose for and installed the old style pitman arm on the box and put the nut back on at no cost...
I managed to smash my left pinky with the box when I sat it on the work bunch... that made me knock my glasses off the bench...
As I was carefully looking for them, as I turned, I felt the aweful feeling under my foot.. yep you guessed it I stepped on my only pair of glasses..
I managed to get them some what back in shape so I can at least use them.
I got the PS box mounted without further insident... well that is if you don't count not being able to find the castle nut to connect the pitman arm...
I was positive I put it back on the ball stud (or what ever that's called).
Well . I knew where ther was one... on the ball stud one the '71 front end... yep I screwed on the ball stud, just like I thought I had on the '68
I put the engine towers on the frame, and they just don't look right...
I am 100% positive that the drivers side tower is from a '71 w/a 390 and PS so I know it's the right one.
Is there some other way that they can go on ???
They look off center and sorta catywompas, but that's how the holes line up... Am I missing something here???
Supposed to set the engine in tomorrow I don't wanna have to pull it out 'cause the mounts don't line up...

The perches are most likely correct. The engine and trans set off center on these trucks to clear the ps box and linkage so I am told. Lookin good.

re: 68 CS Project
Thanks Guys...
I just assumed they were supposed to be centered, so I haven't bolted them down.
I looked at some of the older pics before I removed them for cleaning and saw that's the way they looked then too...
Ahh... that makes me feel better i was wndering if I had to drill another hole to use the PS style perch from the '71 CS
I should have the engine and tranny in this afternoon...
Thanks again,
KaptnKA S

Project update 1-27-08
I just got home... I am so pumped...
My friend Kyle was able to help me all day.
I was amazed by how much we got done...
Sorry, no pics this time...
I not only forgot my camera, but put almost everything together by feel 'cause I forgot my glasses and left my meds at home and was to stubborn to drive a mile home to get them.
Here's a list of what we got done
Power steering box installed and ready to hook up the pump...
Steering column installed (just have to put the steering wheel back on)
Power brake upgrade complete (still have plans to upgrade to disk brakes later, but just having power is a little better than manual).
New clutch set installed
New e-manifolds installed
Engine and rebuilt tranny back in the frame...
It is looking better than I expected...
I'll try to sneek over to Kyle's tomorrow and take a few pics and get them posted...

Yeah Man...
I like that that stripper... it's easy, quick and does a great job.
I used it the vacuum brake booster, it did a great job on it too.
I painted it with chrome in a can...
it's nice a shinny now, but will dull to nearly flat grey...
which is still alright..
There are still a few things I need...
I bought an Edlebrock Pro-Flo air cleaner for it, but have to get an adaptor so it will clear the fuel line.
I will also need to get a longer carb stud...
I have pretty much everything else to get it put back together.
I still need another fan shroud, but I'm workin' on that one.
Any... keep pluggin' away...
I've had mine for 20 years and am just now going thru it to get it back in good dependable shape...
I'm just doing a functional resto with some upgrades.
in the past, I was not afraid to take it anywhere in the country, now it doesn't even leave town.
