I have never done a tranny rebuild I found the rebuild kit at autozone(Part Number:KS-94). What special tools do I need to do this. Is it worth it to go to a rebuild shop and have them do it for me?
I forgot to say I have a c-6 tranny.
What do I need?

well i take it you have never rebuilt a tranny before and even tho the c6 is very simple compared to any other tranny i think i would take it to a shop. if you don't want to or just don't have the money then read up on this as much as you can, buy books, talke to people that have done it before, and make sure you have a very CLEAN workspace other then that just remember how everything goes back together and it should work out just take your time and take pictures often that way if you forget where something goes you can look back at the pictures to help you out.

you will also need a spring compressor to compress the ceter or the drums to put the seals in those pistons. or you could take it to a shop and let them put those seals in for you.

Re: What do I need?
The only ones I ever did were the big Allisons from Terex scrapers and one from a big Case loader. I had a basic book that explained the order of disassembly/reassembly. It was pretty straight forward but you do need a big CLEAN bench to lay everything out. A shop with the doors closed and clean, clean, no dust flying around from some guy on the tire machine, stuff like that.
Once you do a couple, you will realize what a huge profit there is in that business. I know the book pays 13-14 hours for R&R and rebuild and most good techs can do it in half that (or less) time on trannys like the old th350

Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Re: What do I need?
I have known people to be successful who have never done it before, but as stated, those I knew used a huge bench. I have known many more who torture themselves only to give up and take it somewhere to be "bench built" for around 500. So, it can naturally go either way. Having stood watched my C-6 being taken apart, I vote for the bench build. But, I don't have a large and clean area to work in either.

Re: What do I need?
my dad and i didnt use any special tools rebuilding our c6. we just got creative alittle
i ordered a c6 rebuild book that we went off of as well. and i got the rebuild kit and new valve body from TCI.my dad is a pretty good mechanic though, he was a mechanic for many many moons.
we just plopped the tranny onto our pretty small toolbench, took it apart on there. and we layed all the parts out in order on a couple clean mats on the garage floor.
