Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
Hi!
Here's where I am gonna keep my project shop talk for everyone who wants to join me. This is so exciting to me and I can't wait for my journey to begin. I will post the same pics I have in the welcome mat so that they are here for viewing, too!
Thanks for the acceptance of a girl on what is normally considered a man's turf....I appreciate it!
Peace,
Ranger Chick

Kaptnkaos,
How does anyone find out if their truck is supposed to be a two tone one or not. I went out to look at my truck again after seeing that pic you posted and I can't see any evidence of any white paint being at the bottom of the body of the truck at all. But, if it was custom ordered to be all brown, is restoring it to what a factory norm, really restoring it? I like the two tone look better....that truck you posted looks sweet that way.
I'm dreaming of stickers now.......vinyl ones though. I already have fuzzy dice.......this is more fun that what I think I can handle! LOL

your truck factory was Sequoia Brown Metallic (6) over wimbledom white
which i believe is this:
you scored a nice factory combo

I think I scored, too........big time! Please, say it's so that it is indeed a two tone.....I mean, if it's not it's still a heck of a score and I will love him anyway. But, to be true to it's original factory paint job I will paint it whatever it was.....but, that two tone just looks sooo sweet. I am waiting for my camera to charge again...but I will take a pic of the front frame of the truck right behind the bumper....it's that brown color....so, whatever that means I dunno!
I found a junk yard nearby and the guy said he has the AM/FM radio for my truck....I thought they only made stock AM radios only. But, he says they had AM/FM stock radios off the factory lot...I wouldn't know, I was still in elementary school only focusing on trying to find ways to terrorize the poor boys on the playground. So, I will research on that until someone here says yea or nay on what that guy said.

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
your truck looked just like the one in the picture, two-tone brown over white with a white roof. the interior cab color gives some proof to it too.
there were AM/FM radios in our trucks factory, however they are very rare and go for alot of money. usually in the $200's on ebay. however a dentside (1973-1979) AM/FM radio isnt as special and they are often mistaken for our bumpsides (67-72 years) so be careful.
study this picture carefully or bring the picture with you to the junkyard if you want the correct factory AM/FM radio
it should look exactly like this

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
I so love hearing you tell me that about the two tone scheme......that makes my day!
Now, here's something that's making me go HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
It's located beneath where the ciggy lighter is.....and there's a raised lettering on the bottom, but it's not clear as to what it says.....what you see is all that is identifiable. Sorry about it being fuzzy...but, I had to hold a flashlight in one hand and my cam in the other and it was cold......so, I didn't have a steady hand.
Thanks for your help and info.....very appreciated. I will print out that pic on my photocopier and see if it's a match.

Hey Ranger Chick
According to your vin number here's some info on yer truck
Model F250
(the indicator 3 is the max vehicle weight of your truck 8100 lbs)
Engine 390
Made in San Jose CA in March 1972
Original colors were (R) Sequioa Brown and (M) Wimbleton White
The diagram below shows the different ways it could have been painted from the factory
So a solid brown body with a white roof was probably the way yours came from the factory.
Thios link will take you to the data page for '72
http://www.fordification.com/data-1972.htm
The pic of the '72 and trailer is rubirach's (the same truck I posted earlier).
His is actually a tri color...
I'm not sure, but I think the top might be Corinthian white, the color that was used on the white painted steel griles.
It's a brighter white than Wimbleton, or it might be aftermarket.
Hope that helps...

woops i forgot there were 3 possible two tone paint jobs, brown over white with white roof is the most popular, i dont think ive ever seen any other combo besides on this site a couple times.kaptnkaos wrote:Hey Ranger Chick

if you dont care about the paint on your truck right now, try getting a knife and scratching away some paint on the roof, upper body, and lower body. that will tell you for sure where the brown and white colors went. it might be hard to scratch off all other paintjobs on top of the original but ive done it a couple times
and you even scored a 390.. nice

Yeah Ryan,
Ranger Chick said she did that and was wondering if a solid body color with a white top was offered
It looks like she got herself a good one for a resto project...
It looks to be in pretty good shape... a little sheet metal swapping and cleaning up and she'll have a truck to be proud of.
It has almost the same grin as the '71 I parted out...

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
I just came out from outside........yes it's almost ten at night and I am out in the bloody cold gawking at my truck.......but who cares......but, it dawned on me after viewing the front of my truck that the two turn signal lights are not the same.......so, I had to go out there and see how the round one was put on.....how rednecky it's put on. LOL
While I was out there I took a knife....Kitchenaid no less......and scratched off patches as instructed.....and the verdict is for sure in....the entire truck except for the top of the cab was originally painted that metallic brown......and the cab is white. So, now I know for sure the color scheme. The only thing that still baffles me is whyyyyyyyy that green and that type of paint.....it's a thick mat finish. Yuk yuk yuk! Can't wait till I get going on that.
Thank you so much guys for helping me learn more about my truck. This is fun having people to do this with. Not to mention, you guys praising my toy is good for my ego.
Gonna try to get my head from thinking about the truck......perhaps, plugging in my Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert DVD, playing in New York City is a must. But, I love thinking about my truck! LOL
Goodnight,
RC

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
Our trucks are pretty close to the same color........mine is just more goldISH.......and looking at it closely in daylight.....it does have tiny gold metal sparkles in it. So, I am thinking by looking at Seqoia Metallic paint chips online and at the paint in the inside of my cab, along with the code on the identification plate, that it was for sure originally painted Sequoia brown all over the truck, with that white on top of the cab....in fact, by scraping the spots of green paint I did, it was that color scheme.
Now, for my next question..........when I said it runs smooth once it's warmed up.....it takes about ten minutes for it to warm up and takes a lot of babysitting the gas pedal till it kicks in to neutral good enough so I can take my foot off of the gas. It sputters and sounds like the fuel has a hard time keeping pumped into the gas lines....which of these issues could it be or combination of?
1. Plugged fuel pump
2. Gunked up carburetor
3. Just needs that basic tune-up
He just sounds like he's choking on a cigarette for the first ten minutes......and then gives a good hack and is breathing all good again.
Also, when I apply the breaks, it takes a lot of pressure on the break and it makes a groaning sound when the break finally engages and brings the truck to a stop. I am thinking the break fluid might need changed or the break lines need properly bled....or something simple like that....but, if you guys think it's worse than that, please feel free to share your thoughts.
I am starting to make my shopping and to do list...and I am ready to begin this project now...one step at a time.
Hope y'all are doing great today,
RC

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
kapt is probably right about the top of the truck being white. you can tell this because of the chrome strip across the back of the cab. that is how ford hid the paint seam.
on these old trucks they are nornally cold blodded. your 72 probably doesnt have a manual choke on it. so you are probably reling on a electric choke setup to keep it running first thing in the morning. my guess is this to start. it could be a carb kit problem. meaning a tune up and or carb rebuild might help. also these truck carb have a fast idle cam that kind of sets the peddle position to let the truck warm up in the morning. and it possibly isnt catching that to stay at an idle when its cold. really for more info on different question you should ask in other forums to get more and better responces from members who know more.
so is that you in the avatar? is so wow. if not wow.

Re: Ranger Chick's Bad Boy Project - 1972 F250 Ranger
Hey RC...
I'd start with doing a good tune up and oil change... that's always the first thing I do when I buy a rig.
After that, I would do a brake inspection (or have one done at Les Schwab).
When I started my '68 CS project, I inspected everything and made list of things needing to be done,
Then I started collecting parts and tools to do each thing as needed...
The best game plan is to take care of the mechanical issues first, then move onto the body, then finish up with the interior.
You can be working on the mechanical issues, all the while collecting the parts or supplies to get the body cleaned up and ready for paint.. when you paint it, you'll probably want to strip the interior and paint it at the same time.
I have lots of '71 F250 parts (except body sheet metal) so if there are things you need, I might have them in my storage unit.
I'd make ya a good deal on anything I have that I'm not gonna use on my '68.
If ya wanna check out my '68 CS project, click on the blue link below it will take you to my photo album.
(over 200 pics of the project)
The other link is for my '68 Ford/Bluebird bump bus "Olde Skool"...
Right now, it is my work shop, eventually it will be an RV conversion.
I am in process of collecting the tools and stuff I need to work on it. It runs like a top, but needs to have the brakes gone thru before it can be driven very far...
It's not licensed, but every once in a while, I fire it up and drive it around a little before parking it again...
Bumps buses rule !!!
