chevy wants you to change engines

Post by 1982 flareside »

I was helping a buddy change a out of a 93 chevy 2500. It used to have a 454 big block and we drop a 350 in. When we took the blowed 454 out i said we are going to change trans too. My buddy no we aint, i argue and said the truck had a big block they wont bolt up he said watch and drop the engine in the trans bolts up. I was like chevy thought ahead they knew after about 100,000 miles you have to change the engine. With is true these 454 had 105,784.7 miles and it blowed. Even the motor mount are the same.

Yep, pretty much everything will swap over on a Chevy engine (except the obvious brackets, manifolds, etc) since back in the 50's.

No news there...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

that's why chevys are so popular. most people aren't smart enough to figure out different bolt patterns and mounting configurations.

Seems alot of Chevy guys can't seem to tune an engine either - and they all seem to want to show off in front of the Goose.

The other day I was pulling out of the gas station and some guy in his Caprice (you know, the kind with big shiny rims), felt the need to rev his engine. Problem was, he had it tuned so bad that it loped and all you heard was the valves slamming into the heads - Just a slow BLAT, BLAT, BLAT, BLAT. I guess he thought Chevys should sound like Harleys.

I agree, my girlfriends beloved 2500 Z71 started blowing smoke yesterday............. Looks like her 350 is on the blink. Upon checking it she found it was a quart low of oil. So that must be the source of the smoke. Thinking aboub changing to a thicker oil to try to suqeeze out some more life. and im NOT rebuilding that POS, Ill engine swap.

It could be the oil drain holes in the head are starting to clog. That's semi common on the
small blacks and also the V6's. If that happens, the oil won't drain fast enough, and it will
leak mostly from the valve stem seals after they get flooded with oil. So it will act like valve
stem seal problems.. IE: smoke the worst when first started, and starts to clear a bit..
But it won't ever totally clear cuz the oil continues to flood the valves when running.
Course, it could well be another problem, but that's fairly common on those engines if sludge
starts to build up. I had this happen on V6, and I used an old speedo cable to clear out the drains.
Cured the smoke problem. BTW... A leaking tranny solenoid can cause smoke too..
The vacuum will draw tranny fluid up into the intake and burn.

Whatever it was, it sounded like Pure T. Crap, and it was obvious it was deliberate.

Now if I had a dollar for every time a Chevy or Dodge owner felt the need to rev their engine around my bump, I'd be rich! :woohoo:

The interchangabily is one of the best things about chevy and why they are so popular. I think there would be more ford hotrodders if there wasn't 3 different bell housings, 2 balances and firing orders for sbf. When trying to build a hotrod it is a major pain trying t remember what will interchange with this and so on.
