Yeah no oil is not fun but I do got to say I had a 88 chevy c10 that I drove 260 miles with no oil tell it had a rod knocking I did it cuz it was a chevy and its still runing put another 25,000 miles with the knock and it still runs
Quaker state and fram filters are the worse. Run Quaker in a car and it would gum up everything that didn't move, remove the intake and the lifter valley was full of black crud.
I always heard that about Quaker State but that and Fram is all my dad ever used in my 71 F100. It had 230k on the original 302 when I pulled it for a 351W. I pulled the valve covers and intake and it was very clean for that many miles. Still ran smooth with no noise or oil usage but was pretty weak.
I like Rottela 15-40 for my 460. Keeps good pressure even when hot and stays slick. I use Motorcraft filters.
clint
Worst oil is pennzoil, In 1980 my dad bought a new F100 with a 302 and oil changes every 3,000 miles, At 80,000 the engine blew and when the engine was pulled apart the engine was packed with oil sludge you could read "power by ford" in the sludge under the covers, pulled the intake and could see the imprint of the bottom of the intake because the lifter vally was full of sludge. Ive never seen a motor that full of sludge since.
Im like cdeal, i like rottela because ive pulled apart 800,000 mile caterpillers and its pretty clean inside.
I've heard too many bad things about Fram filters. I usually run NAPA Gold (rebranded WIX). I use Mobile 1 full synthetic in my Ram.
I've been topping off Fred (my bump) with NAPA brand oil. I'm not sure what I will run in it when I fix all the leaks.
Rotella sounds like a good idea, but how hard is it to start a 360 w/ 15w-40 when it's below freezing outside?

The basic idea behind multi grade oils is they act like the lighter grade in cold temps and the heavier grade in warmer temps. The testing specs get pretty complicated but that's the general idea. My 72 is parked in an unheated garage from the first hint of snow and stays there until the spring rains wash the salt off of the roads. I start it about every 6 weeks or so and let it run a half hour or so. The 289 fires right up. In western PA when we get what the weather guessers call lake effect snow it gets flippin cold and stays that way for weeks.
Uh oh... I've always used Fram filters. Guess I better not any more!
My grandfather was a civil service mechanic at NAS Whiting Field for 30 years (in the same service bay that whole time). He could tell what had Quaker State and what didn't. The 'Q' gummed everything up like was previously mentioned.
He always used Havoline. I have too and have had no problems.

Napa Brand oil is valvoline bottled for napa so it is really good oil. Evidence of this is that on occasion you will get napa oil with white tops with the v in them!
