Getting ready for winter

Post by fordman »

well my hair is getting longer. and i dont like to grow a beard but i havent shaved in a while. but i wanted one more shave before winter started getting too close. i guess its too late now. or if you listen to the old indians they say something like the buffalo are getting thier coats back already . so it must be a hard winter coming . i have considered putting on my long underwear for the season again. it looks like we may nto get the roof on so it will leak all winter and spring of next year. and we don't have a place to cut wood for the winter. how nice. i hate buring pallets. they dont put off enough heat.

Yep.. winter's coming. It's snowing in the higher elevations. Not here yet- Libby is one of the lowest places in Montana at 2000ft above sea level.
I checked the antifreeze in my trucks a few days ago.
We're stock piling firewood- have about two cords right now.
Stock piling hay- picking up two tons tomorrow.
And digging out the winter coats. It's 29 degrees right now with highs in the 50s all week...

The couple times I was stationed at Ft. Benning I always hated the winter months, that southern cold cuts right to the bone.

I'm not looking forward to winter. I'm trying to get the 4x4 running good enough to drive so I can park the other one. I almost took out a mailbox last year because of no traction in the snow. Plus, once the cold hits you don't feel like doing anything outside. I like being outside rather than stuck in the house. Have to break out the portable heater for the garage.

Not looking forward to winter at all here but will be glad the summer heat is passed. I have not put up any firewood this year as I finally decided my back just won't let me. I know I will regret it. I burnt about 12 loads from a 5x10 trailer last year ans still ran out. I have gas available and will probably get it turned back on and put a wall heater back in the shop. Still not sure about the house. Had gas logs once and a wall heater in the house and shop and it got pretty expensive. Have a heat pump that works but stay cold with that pos.
Thought about a waste oil heater at least for the shop. Anybody use one?

Well I don't have to deal with the snow challenges that some of you guys have to deal with, but I can't wait for some cooler weather!

I built a modified version of the one on motherearth.com a few years ago and man that thing would ROCK, I'm sure they have updated their plans by now and they had links to people who did beef it up. Basically you have to make sure you put in a water separator of some sort, air flow (I used old blow dryers), a valve to control oil flow and an ignition source. I would go to the mother earth site and follow some of the links. Have fun!

Prepping for winter in the California Central Valley is a pretty easy three step process.
Step one:
Move umbrella from rear of closet (buried behind all the sports gear)
Step two:
Change the furnace filter
Step three:
Change the clock

Out here we have three seasons; low, medium and high. We have to spend money to go see snow (that lasts more than a day or two), and fires are used for ambiance. :hmm:
In fact we don't even get to have real fire places any more. Just fake logs and gas.
