my first big let down.

Post by ezernut9mm »

the 67 let me down today. fuel pump died about 40 miles from the house. i had the youngest boy with me and we were coming back from the lake when it happened. truck was running great, but was a hard start after shutting it off for fuel, food, bathroom breaks, etc.
i figured it was vapor lock with the 100 degree temps. on the final stop for gas the old girl just wouldn't start again. i expected boiling gas in the carb, but there was nothing. nothing at all. so i took the fuel line off at the carb and cranked it and nothing. fuel to the pump and nothing at the carb, so i had to have her towed home. it hurt my pride more than my pocketbook, but still sucked. hope to have her up and running sometime this week.
i just needed to vent a bit. no big deal. at least it was an international that got her home and not a gmc. lol

that sucks. are you sure it wasnt a blocked fuel line instead of a bad pump? none of my fords have ever made me return on foot unless it was something major like a pump or broken cam shaft.

this is a first for me too. it could be a blocked fuel line, but i have gas to the pump and absolutely none after. not a trickle or trace. could ethanol be the culprit here? i have never heard of total failure all at once.

i had that happen with a new pump. it wouldnt pump at all. i took it apart and the one way valve had popped out of it. i popped it back in and the pump worked.

The only time one of my old Ford trucks has let me down was the same situation. I had a 78 short bed F100 with a 351w I built. The pump just totally gave up while I was driving down the highway. Luckily for some reason I had an extra in the bed and I swapped it right there in about 20 minutes. Come to think of it, I think the one that quit was a new one and the original was in the bed. I had only replaced it because I replaced everything on the new motor.

They are great trucks but they are getting a little old and are machines after all. They will break sooner or later. I have driven my 71 F100 about...let me think...it shows 399,*** on it and dad put about 37,000 on her so do the math. I have only walked once and I was about a 1/10th mile form home. I ran out of gas once but that was my fault.
I had an oil pump get clogged up from my trying to clean up the top of the 460 and letting too much gunk get down the drain holes. That time she started loosing oil pressure on the interstate and I limped up the side of the interstate so my my wife wouldn't have to walk and got towed home. My fault also. Put a pump in it and it's been running every since. Oh, tossed a belt back in 83 30 miles from home when we were in Texas but I would drive her until she heated up, let her cool and drive some more. SHe got us home without walking. I cannot complain at all about my ol girl.
I did have a fuel pump go out at work one day. A co-worker came in late and told me it was leaking fuel. I took the company truck to the parts store and changed out the pump in the parking lot. Didn't walk that time either. lol
Only times I've walked was my fault not my 71 F100's fault.

from what i've experienced the fuel pump usually starts leaking fuel from the diaphram for awhile before it calfs it,
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

still trying to work this out. the old pump pushed fuel manually by hand. the new pump seems stronger. hit a snag. the inlet housing on the new pump cracked before i could get the fitting halfway seated. put the old pump back on and started the truck. it ran at an idle for about ten minutes and died. i could hear fuel boiling in the carb (expected that, but no flow to the carb after that.)
i don't know where to start. i am going to replumb the fuel lines from the tank to the carb and install the new pump. i need to buy a filter wrench for the pump as well because i cannot get the old canister off to inspect it. i have two tanks right now with two switches so i want to go direct from the cab tank to the fuel pump and bypass a lot of crap.
good thing it has been over 100* lately so i can lots done. lol

sounds like heat soak. but it could be something in the tank or lines too.

Whats the possibility of the old fuel filter being completely clogged?

That does sound a bit like the fuel filter in the pump being clogged and stuff floating around inside. Sometimes a few last clogging pieces will float out of the way when it sits and then after you run it a bit they get sucked back up into those last little flowing spots and stop the flow...

If the spring inside was to die/break it shouldn't work at all, I would think. :hmm:

Usually when the diaphragm goes you will see fuel weeping out the little hole on the side, unless it is an old chevy that they just leaked into the motor oil  ...

I had my fuel pump on my highboy strand me at the emissions station a couple of years back, had my dad pick up a new one and bring it to me, changed it there and drove home. :) This crappy ethanol blend fuel we have is hard on old fuel pumps and carburetor seals and power valves as they were not designed for the ethanol... the replacement stuff now days is, so once you replace it you should be good.

anyone know a good way to get the filter off, or a place to buy a filter wrench?

i have a large pair of pliers i used the only time i have ever removed one of those cans. i just grabbed it at the bottom and turned it. you can use a strap wrench. made from a belt. just put the belt through the buckle and slide it up over the can and twist the belt to get the can off. and oil filter wrench may also work if you have one small enough.
