When is enough torque?

Post by elgemcdlf »

I was on the IRS forum & checking into what I would need to do to get my front wheels off the ground on launch. Came across this pic.

Thats nice! Hopefully thats all that got damaged, because I've seen drive shafts and transmissions grenade and come through the floor boards. Remember, Pumped up motor + Sticky slicks in the back = Finding the weakest link.

There is a group of us wanting to know what that tube is made of to twist up like that instead of shearing.

Thinwall drivelines will do that. It doesn't always take a lot either. A 4BT powered F250 I sold twisted the rear driveshaft right off like that. I'd have figured the Dana 60 rear would have broke first.

My guess is that is mild steel tubing.

Yes most driveshafts are just mild steel. I've seen quite a few heavy trucks twist them up like that.
