Drop it like its hot!

Post by Mr-Dyslexic »

(1970 f100 swb) Long store straight need to go down 5 in the front and 6 in the rear. Drop beams will give me 3 up front where can I get the other 2? Now in the back I can't find a flip kit if someone can help me out that would be great. Also I know I'll need a c notch does anyone sell one, I can fab one up but if there is somewhere you can buy for less then what it would cost in time for me to make them I rather do that. How low will the flip kit get me 4 inches? Is so here do I get the other 2 lowering leaf spring or springs?

Cuttin one quarter to one-half my net ya another inch up front but that's it before camber gets outta whack.

Axle flip? Airbagit.com carries kits as does Fatman Fabrications. Wanna try fabbing your own? Got to about page 31 of my build thread linked in my signature. There's dimensioned drawings posted of Fatman's components including the shock relocation brackets and compatible shock pns. An axle flip nets 5 to 5.5 inches of drop.

Lowering leafs are available thru Detroit Eaton Springs. Relatively expensive IMO.

Btw, these rig's rear are set two inches taller in back so the lowering needs to maintain a two-inch difference in order to set level. You knew that, right?

Ya I want it to have a slight rake. Ok so it sounds like I can get the 6 with a flip kit and lowering leaf springs. Now for the front lowering spring and drop beams will get me 4 with out messing anything up. Is there no way to get another inch to make 5 up front with out messing with my alignment? I'm putting a 460 with aluminum head you think the weight alone will drop it another inch, so I will get 5? Also I know with some lift kits I have done say the kit will give you 3 inches but it will really give you 5 or it might only give you two. How accurate are these kit regarding that?

Not that I know of with drop beams.... However, the front can be "lowered" by staggering the tire sizes. Spec a 27-inch tall tire for the front and a 28-inch tall tire in back.

Ok now let's say I egnore that it will mess up my camber if I put the 3 inch drop beams and a
2 inch lowering springs(assuming I can buy one?). What will it drive like? What are the side effects? And why and how does it mess up my camber if I go lower the 4 inch in the front?

Problem with lowering springs up front is not only throwing off camber but you also loose what little suspension travel you have as it is. You'll be bouncing off your bump stops.

In my experience both aftermarket drop beams ( aim or airbagit and djm dream beams) seem to be made so that the camber corrects itself with cut or lowered coils. In both cases we have had to cut the coils to get the camber correct on both my 67 f250 with airbagit beams and my buddies 65 f100 with djm beams. For some reason not to many people want to acknowledge this it seems an unspoken thing for some reason. In regards to a flip kit airbagit make a great kit. It can leave the rear slightly lower than the front but this is easily corrected with a taller rear tyre.

Stiffer shocks like Bilstein HDs and cut the bumpstops.
