Suspension bolt kits and I-beams

Post by Ohgoose »

I am in the process of a complete rebuild of a 67 f100 short bed and want to know is there anyone who sells a complete suspension bolt/nut kit similar to body panels kits? I have searched and have found nothing as a kit, I have the original hardware, but it's rusty and would prefer to use new. I know I can replace them by buying them individually and some components will have the hardware, but a kit would be great.

Secondly is there anyone selling new radius arms? I have one that is questionable at the bushing end, quite a bit of rust. Thanks for the help.

If you have more time than money, then a bench grinder armed with a wire wheel works wonders... I listen to a ball game while doing it. Kinda monotonous otherwise.

I will also soak rusty hardware in Evapo-rust. Works great. A gallon is about $20.

Alternatively, ever try electrolyis? Low-Buck Rust Removal Using Electrolysis

I've done driveshafts, radius arms, I-beams, assorted brackets, calipers, rotors, spindles... works AWESOME.

Electrolosys creates some hydrogen embrittlement and I don't think I would recommend cleaning critical fasteners with it. Wire wheel will do a great job but as said above, it's pretty mind numbing. I will also say that the stuff Ford put the truck together with is most likely a lot higher quality than modern hardware as long as there are no wear or damage issues.

When looking for hardware, I always go to McMaster-Carr first http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-cap-screws/=ybzxif. I typically upgrade to Grade 8 for critical applications. They carry zinc and black oxide plated so I can make it pretty or hide it depending whether it's going to be seen or not. While many of our bolts are odd lengths (3-1/8" long for example), I've found that it doesn't hurt to go the extra 1/8" or so and buy standard lengths. If it's too long, I'll add a flat washer and lock washer to make up the difference.

Nice thing is, most of the suspension hardware is pretty cut-and-dried, you can go to fastenal and get it off the shelf.

If you order from mcmaster or fastnal online you can spec 'domestic' hardware, but for how heavily most of this stuff is stressed, I'd trust china grade 8 just as well as anything.

Thanks guys this is what I thought, just find a good supplier of grade 8 hardware and put the kit together myself.
