Front Disc Brake Piston Removal and Compression

Post by Johnm »

Hey everyone,

I'm working on the front disc brakes of my 69 F250 and I don't know how to:
A. Get the pistons out to replace the seals behind them.
B. Compress the pistons back in to reinstall th brake.

Help...
Thanks!

Remove the bleeder screw and then wrap a rag over both pistons. Hold it tightly. Then apply compressed air thru the bleeder screw port and the pistons should pop out.

Use very low air pressure on your blow gun to blow the pistons out. Again, very low air pressure or leave the rubber nozzle tip of to the side so as to bleed off some pressure. Be careful and keep your fingers out of the way!! Put a block of wood and/or a rag between the piston and the caliper to soften the blow.
After replacing the seals, you have to start the pistons back into the calipers by hand but once they are started you have to use either monster size channel lock pliers, a c-clamp, or a vise to push the pistons back into place.
