Junk yard steering gear swap?

Post by Zorm »

I got a leaking steering gear on my 71 F250. I can rebuilt it, or get it rebuilt for $150.00 or get a new one for just under $300. Or, is there another option.
Like on my 83 Cherokee, with the stock 83 steering gear, it takes 3.5 turns to go from center to full left/right. I was able to swap in a steering gear from a 97 Cherokee and get 1.5 turns from center to full left/right. Also, newer gear and a factory drop pitman arm. Only thing I had to do was get the newer pitman arm center machined to accept the 83 Cherokee drag link.

Anything like that for our trucks?
1971 F250 Camper Special, family owned since 1972
1983 Cherokee, last of the big ones, bought in Italy, family owned since 1998
1965 Corvair Corsa Convertible, 140 engine, 4 speed.

HE guides my path, forgives me when I stray and lights my life

I've heard nothing but good things about RedHead Steering products, and if I'm ever in the need of a new box, that's where I'll head. They're a tad above the $300 mark, but well worth the expense. They replace bushings with needle bearings along with other careful machine work, and the boxes are better than factory pieces.

AFAIK there is no other quick-ratio box available for these trucks.
