What's with BLACK wheels?

Post by 68RGR »

What, did we run out of chromium or aluminum polish?

I'm not talking about factory steel wheels painted black. I am talking about those butt-ugly, black 'custom' wheels.

I keep seeing them and asking myself why anyone would spend good money to make their vehicle look worse. Then again, they don't show brake dust as bad . . . I guess. Kinda of like having a yellow truck in the spring. Or the septic tank guy having a brown/black truck . . . After all, some people pay 100 bucks or more for jeans with holes in 'em!

Obviously, this is a personal choice - As is my opinion of them.

But, what is the attraction? I just don't get it. Black sidewalls and black wheels? I'd feel the same way about chrome sidewalls and chrome wheels. Well, at least, I THINK I would. Never seen it.

The guy who came up with black wheels should be buried in the same grave with the one who came up with 'rodent' rod. Nope, I'm not going to write it or say it! Had to be Chevy guys . . . :nono:

DISCLAIMER: If you have black wheels (by choice), good for you. Guess that's what you wanted and you are welcome to them. Just remember, they don't HAVE to be permanent. :hmm:

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

Chrome don't get ya home! That being said I enjoy vehicles dressed up either way "tastefully".

It all depends upon the vehicle and what look you want.

I'll play devils advocate, and say that they do look nice on certain applications. I think it gives a car a sinister look. Once again, it needs to be on the right car, and have the right stance, and typically a black on black car...but it can look choice. I prefer a machined lip to break up the monochromatic...but it can look solid in all black as well.

How about the guy that gets sold white wall tires then turns the white walls inside so the black side shows? :hmm:

I have to agree that it depends on the look that you're after. They do look sinister on the right vehicle. I've been thinking of using them on my truck, especially if I decide to paint my grille black. I won't use them by themselves though. I would use some chrome trim rings and chrome center caps, with chrome lug nuts too of course. I've always liked that look. We'll see. :)

I like the two sports cars with the black wheels, but I don't like that SUV.

must not be a 'stones fan...

i like painting stuff black because it means you never have to wash it, and if it gets scratched or runs over a mailbox/prius/deer/hippies you can touch it up easy.

i've broken way too many aluminum rims sliding around in wisconsin winters, and dealt with way too many rusted on wheel weights, to ever put alloys on a truck

this 'aluminum polish' you speak of? is that like polish sausage? I loves me some kielbasa but i'm not sure how it relates to trucks or wheels...

I like flat black paint jobs but I think the black wheels are a copy off cop wheels

Nuh-uh. I replaced all that stuff at least a year before I put the wheels on. ....The engine is a different story though. :D
