Can a bad power brake booster cause engine problems?
I read somewhere that a bad power brake booster can cause vacuum leaks which can affect engine performance. Mine sometimes makes a hissing noise when stepping on the brake pedal. Is there any merit to this?

absolutley, If the diaphram inside the booster ruptures. instant vacuum leak to your intake manifold. thus causing engine performance issues like running lean, induction backfire's. etc etc. if yours is hissing then its probable you have a defective booster.
